In My Mailbox (Week 4)

IN MY MAILBOX
*Hosted by The Story Siren, inspired by Pop Culture Junkie

This is what I got in my mailbox this week:

The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty

In an attempt to bridge the gap between the rich Brookfielders and less-fortunate Ashbury kids, a penpal club is arranged with the intention that the exchange of letters will make the two sides better understand one another, but when things don't go as planned, a full-scale war breaks out between the two schools with little hope for a successful truce.

I won this over at Books, Boys, Buzz!

So, just one book this week. But that's actually good, I have to read all books I got during the last few weeks!

Cover Combat: Vampire Academy

I don't know about you, but I really do judge books by their covers.

A boring or ugly cover could make me avoid reading a certain book, no matter how good people say it is. So for me, covers do matter. In Cover Combat I will compare US covers to the Swedish covers of the same books, to see which covers I like the most!

This meme is inspired by a meme I have seen on some other book blogs. For example Bloody Bookaholic and Wondrous Reads are comparing US and UK covers, and I Want To Read That is having Cover Wars on her blog. And I'm sure lots of other bloggers are doing similar posts! (Do you know who the creator is?)

Anyhow, it's time for YA Vampire Books' first ever COVER COMBAT!
Since the Swedish cover for Shadow Kissed, the third Vampire Academy book, recently was released, I decided to compare the US and the Swedish covers of the Vampire Academy books.

Here you go, the first three US. Vampire Academy covers:

And now, the Swedish Covers:

Which covers do you prefer?

To be honest, I love neither the US nor the Swedish covers. I like the US covers for Shadow Kissed and Spirit Bound (not pictured), but I'm not a big fan of the first two covers.

What I like about the Swedish covers are that you clearly can see that these books belong to the same series. I also like that the girl's eye color changes along with the pattern on the covers. (From red, to blue, to yellow). Though I have to admit that the yellow eyes look kind of creepy! :P I think the Swedish covers are intense, and scarier than the US covers, but the girl on the cover doesn't look like Rose to me. What do you think?

So tell me, which covers do you like the best?
And, do you think I should do more posts of this kind?
I like to watch international covers, but perhaps you don't! Please let me know what you think!

Fun-Post Friday: Who's Your Vampire Lover?

Who's your Vampire Lover? Do this quiz and find out!

I have to say, I'm happy over my result! Take a look at these vampires:

The Heroic Vampire

You love a man who’s romantic and likes to seek justice. That’s why your perfect vampire match is Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in “Twilight,” David Boreanaz as Angel in “Angel,” Wesley Snipes as Blade in “Blade” or Kyle Schmid as Henry Fitzroy in “Blood Ties” (pictured from left to right). He’s the type of vampire lover who will want to protect you and others from harm, and he has a strong sense of wanting to be part of a larger moral good. Just remember that being with a self-righteous do-gooder can have its drawbacks, and it can bite you in the end if things are taken to the extreme.

Book Review: Living Dead in Dallas

Title: Living Dead in Dallas
Series: Southern Vampire Mysteries/Sookie Stackhouse (Book 2)
Author: Charlaine Harris
Released: 2002

Waiting tables, sweeping floors, reading minds and solving mysteries for the undead. It's all in a day's work for Sookie...

Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is on a streak of real bad luck. First, her co-worker gets murdered and no one seems to care. Then Sookie is attacked - and poisoned - late one night by some weird and apparently mythical beast. She only survives because the local vampires roll up and graciously suck the poison from her veins (like they didn't enjoy it). But in return the blood-suckers need a favor.

Which is why Sookie ends up in Dallas, using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire, on the condition that her undead friends don't do anything, well, vampiric while she's there. Easier said than done. All it takes is one delicious blonde and one small mistake for things to turn deadly...

Review: I enjoyed this book far more than I enjoyed Dead Until Dark.
Since I have watched the TV show True Blood, I keep comparing the books to the TV series, and I have to say that I liked Living Dead in Dallas much more than True Blood Season 2! While the TV series focused a lot on drinking, drugs and sex, the book focuses more on Sookie and her relationship to Bill, Eric, and the other residents of Bon Temps. The maenad, which was a big part of the TV show , was actually a minor event in the book.

Sookie was a more likeable character in this book. She was very loyal and honest and kept her promises, even if it put her in dangerous situations.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Club Dead. A book I haven't seen transformed to televison!

Waiting On Wednesday (1/27)

Titel: The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Shadow Souls
Series: The Vampire Diaries (Book 6)
Author: L. J. Smith
Release Date: March 16, 2010

A penitent Damon, along with Elena, and Matt follow Stefan into the darkest dimension in an attempt to set him free from the prison he has found instead of salvation. Bonnie and Meredith join Elena as all three are forced to enter as slaves, the chained and leashed property of a vampire--Damon.

Elena Gilbert is at the center of magic and danger beyond her imagining. But this time her vampire boyfriend, Stefan, isn’t there to help! Elena is forced to trust her life to his brother, Damon, the handsome but deadly vampire who wants Elena, body and soul. The tension between Elena and Damon mounts until Elena is faced with a terrible decision: Which brother does she really want?

The drama, danger, and forbidden love that mark the New York Times bestselling Vampire Diaries series are in full effect here, with Elena Gilbert once again brimming with supernatural powers.

I didn't like the previous Vampire Diaries book, The Return: Nightfall, but I'm willing to give this one a try!

Blood Ties: A Crime Series With Bite

Okay, so the Vampire of the Week post I made yesterday, made some of you curious about the TV show Blood Ties, didn't it? Well, that was my intention! You see this show isn't just about that super cute vampire called Henry Fitzroy. It is ALSO a great crime show with strong characters.
Imagine a mix between Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Moonlight and CSI. What do you get? Well, you get Blood Ties!

The main character Victoria "Vicki" Nelson is such a strong and independent woman, but also stubborn and proud. She's drawn to two different men, her ex-boyfriend, good cop Mike Celluci, and Henry Fitzroy, a kind but dangerous vampire. The tension and attraction between Vicki and Henry, and Vicki and Mike is so thick one could almost cut it with a knife.
One good, one bad. One dead and one alive. Who will Vicki end up with?

Summary from BloodTiesTv.com:

Based on the novels by Tanya Huff, this show revolves around PI Vicki Nelson - formerly a detective with the Metropolitan Toronto Police. She was losing her sight, but quit the force rather than accept a desk job. However, her last case turns out to be a doozy, involving vampires and the supernatural.

Sure we all think our lives are complicated. But consider ex-cop Vicki Nelson's.

It’s not bad enough that her career was sidetracked by failing vision… or that the fiery relationship with a handsome cop she tried to abandon won’t stay dead… but when her latest love interest turns out to be a 480 year old vampire, you really have to give her the prize.

And when a growing part of her private eye caseload begins shifting from fraud investigations and cheating spouses to battling ghosts, ghouls, zombies, and demons, that’s when even Vicki has to wonder who she's pissed off.

Based on Tanya Huff’s “Vicki Nelson” novels – the Blood series – Blood Ties is a one-hour crime drama series, following the misadventures of Vicki Nelson, a feisty, attractive, 29 year old ex-cop turned private investigator with a degenerative eye disorder, who seems destined to sit on the sidelines until fate intervenes, turning her life upside down.

After witnessing a terrifying murder, Vickie finds herself on a collision course with a stranger – Henry Fitzroy – who is also investigating the murder. Henry just happens to be a vampire and the bastard son of Henry VIII.

This unlikely pair forms more than just a crime-solving partnership that complicates Vicki’s long-term love affair with ex-crime partner and boyfriend Mike Celluci… it sends Vicki into a dark underworld where fantasy meets reality, violence and passion make strange bedfellows, and the lines between good and evil are just a little blurred...

Blood Ties was cancelled after two seasons, with a total of 22 episodes.

I'm not sure if this works, but you should be able to watch Blood Ties episodes online at myLifeTime. Click on this link to get there!

And click here to get to Blood Ties TV, the official website.

I hope I got you interested in watching this show! If you decide to give it a try, please let me know what you think!

Vampire of the Week

Vampire of the Week is a semi-weekly feature on my blog. For more information, go here.

And this week's Vampire of the Week is. . .

HENRY FITZROY

Henry Fitzroy is one of the main characters in the Canadian television series Blood Ties, based on the "Blood Books" by Tanya Huff.

Based on the historical character Henry Fitzroy, 1st Duke of Richmond ans Somerset - the bastard son of Henry VIII of England, Henry Fitzroy chose love over familial duty and sacrificed his mortal life to remain forever with the woman he loved; Christina. Vampiric circumstances, however, prevented him from remaining with her and now, after 450 years of existence, he is living in Toronto as a graphic novelist.

His quiet, hidden life takes on a new twist when he collides with Vicki Nelson in an attempt to stop a man from bringing a demon into the mortal world. As they work to solve this case, and subsequently other supernatural problems, Henry grows deeply attracted to Vicki's willful nature and exuberance for life, eventually falling for her. Though she seems to resist his advances, he continues to pursue her and, mostly due to his centuries of experience and knowledge of both sides of the supernatural, he becomes Vicki's partner and bodyguard.

Henry is played by the Canadian actor Kyle Schmid. Kyle was borned in 1984 in Mississauga, Ontario.

IN MY MAILBOX

* Hosted by The Story Siren, inspired by Pop Culture Junkie *

Won:

The Seven Rays by Jessica Bendinger

You are more than you think you are.

THAT IS THE ANONYMOUS MESSAGE that Beth Michaels receives right before she starts seeing things. Not just a slept-through my-alarm-clock, late-for-homeroom, haven't had-my-caffeine-fix kind of seeing things. It all starts with some dots, annoying pink dots that pop up on and over her mom and her best friend's face. But then things get out of control and Beth is seeing people's pasts, their fears, their secrets, their desires. The images are coming at Beth in hi-def streaming video and she can't stop it. Everyone thinks she's crazy and she's pretty sure she agrees with them. But crazy doesn't explain the gold envelopes that have started arriving, containing seeing keys and mysterious tarot cards. To Beth, it all seems too weird to be true. You are more than you think you are? But here's the thing: What if she is?

This one sounds really interesting and unique. Can't wait to start reading it. I won this book from a contest on Book Bound.

From the Library:

Fruset Blod (Frostbite) by Richelle Mead

It's winter break at St. Vladimir's, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy's crawling with Guardians--including Rose's hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if handto- hand combat with her mom wasn't bad enough, Rose's tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason's got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa's head while she's making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy's not taking any risks....This year, St. Vlad's annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price...

Okay, so I read this one . . .again. I just wanted to try it in Swedish to see if this book was just as great. It was.

3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows by Ann Brashares

seeds
Polly has an idea that she can't stop thinking about, one that involves changing a few things about herself. She's setting her sights on a more glamorous life, but it's going to take all of her focus. At least that way she won't have to watch her friends moving so far ahead.

roots
Jo is spending the summer at her family's beach house, working as a busgirl and bonding with the older, cooler girls she'll see at high school come September. She didn't count on a brief fling with a cute boy changing her entire summer. Or feeling embarrassed by her middle school friends. And she didn't count on her family at all. . .

Ama is not an outdoorsy girl. She wanted to be at an academic camp, doing research in an air-conditioned library, earning A's. Instead her summer scholarship lands her on a wilderness trip full of flirting teenagers, blisters, impossible hiking trails, and a sad lack of hair products.
It is a new summer. And a new sisterhood. Come grow with them.

I have read all four "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" books, and wanted to try this one!

Waiting On Wednesday (1/20)

Title: The Body Finder
Author: Kimberly Derting
Release Date: March 16

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her “power” to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he’s claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay’s intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she’s falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.

Oooh intruiging, right? Sounds like a good AND scary book! Definitely a book I'm waiting for! Love the cover!

Book Review: Boys That Bite

Title: Boys That Bite
Series: The Blood Coven (Book 1)
Author: Mari Mancusi
Published: 2006

Technically Sunshine can't get killed-because she's immortal. Well, not quite yet. Due to the worst case of mistaken identity with her dark-side-loving twin sister at a Goth club called Club Fang, Magnus, a vampire hottie, went for Sunshine's innocent neck. Now if she doesn't reverse it in time, Magnus will be her blood mate forever and she's doomed to be a blood-gulping, pasty, daylight-hating vampire. That would seriously bite.

And now, after the unfortunate slaying of the vampire leader, Sunshine, her sister Rayne, and Magnus must find the one thing that can solve her problem: the Holy Grail. They wish it were a joke but it's not. It's absolutely necessary that Sunshine gets out of this in time, because somehow she scored the hottest prom date in her school, the mouth-watering Jake Wilder. So she just can't be a vampire for the prom-let alone the rest of eternity.

My Review: The main character, Sunshine, was very likable and realistic - and loads of fun! Sunshine is spontaneous and quick-witted, and her reactions to her new "deadly" situation were very realistic.

Another fun thing about the book are all the pop culture references, Mari mentions Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dracula, Zac Efron & Robert Pattinson, just to name a few. Very cool! It makes the book even more realistic in my mind.

This book was very good, and ended with a cliffhanger that left me wanting to read the next book in this series, Stake That!, right away!

In My Mailbox: Week 2

If last week was a bad book week for me, this one was great! It's going to take me a while to read all these books! :) Here's what I got in My Mailbox this week:

Bought:

My Love Lies Bleeding (a.k.a Hearts At Stake) by Alyxandra Harvey
On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black—agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family.
Luckily she has her own secret weapon—her human best friend Lucy—who is willing to defend Solange’s right to a normal life, whether she’s being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen. Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange’s eternal life—Lucy and Solange’s brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black—in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover’s heart.

From the wonderful Mandy of Edge of Seventeen (Thank you!):

Fallen by Lauren Kate
There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

From the generous Jennifer Laurens (Thank you!):

Heavenly (signed!) by Jennifer Laurens
I met someone who changed everything. Matthias. My autistic sister's guardian angel. Honest. Inspiring. Funny. Hot. And immortal. That was the problem. What could I do? I did what any other girl would do-I fell in love with him. Zoe's sister darts in front of cars. Her brother's a pothead. Her parents are so overwhelmed; they don't see Zoe lost in her broken life. Zoe escapes the only way she knows how: partying. Matthias, a guardian sent from Heaven, watches over Zoe's autistic sister. After Zoe is convinced he's legit, angel and lost girl come together in a love that changes destiny. But Heaven on Earth can't last forever.

Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris
Waiting tables, sweeping floors, reading minds and solving mysteries for the undead. It's all in a day's work for Sookie...

Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris
When Sookie's brother Jason's eyes start to change, she knows he's about to turn into a were-panther for the first time. But her concern becomes cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population-and Jason's new panther brethren suspect he may be the shooter. Now, Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks, unless the killer decides to find her first.

This Charming Man by Marian Keyes
Paddy de Courcy is Ireland's debonair politician, the "John F. Kennedy Jr. of Dublin." His charm and charisma have taken hold of the country and the tabloids, not to mention our four heroines: Lola, Grace, Marnie, and Alicia. But though Paddy's winning smile is fooling Irish minds, the broken hearts he's left in his past offer a far more truthful look into his character.

Narrated in turn by each woman, This Charming Man explores how their love for this one man has shaped their lives. But in true Marian Keyes fashion, this is more than a story of four love affairs. It's a testament to the strength women find in themselves through work, friendship, and family, no matter what demons may be haunting their lives. Depression, self-doubt, domestic abuse—each of these women has seen tough times in life, and it's through Keyes's wonderful storytelling ability that these subjects are approached with the appropriate tone and candor. Her deft touch provides a gripping story and, ultimately, a redemptive ending.

To read . . .

I've been thinking about starting the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, but to be able to read them, I would have to buy the books. What do you think, is it worth it? Have you read the books? What do you think? I would love to hear your opinions, whether you liked the books or not, So comment away!
