Book Review: My Love Lies Bleeding/Hearts At Stake

Title: My Love Lies Bleeding/Hearts At Stake
Author: Alyxandra Harvey
Series: The Drake Chronicles, Book 1
Released: December 2009 (US) January 2010 (UK)

On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black—agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family. Luckily she has her own secret weapon—her human best friend Lucy—who is willing to defend Solange’s right to a normal life, whether she’s being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen. Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange’s eternal life—Lucy and Solange’s brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black—in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover’s heart.

Review: I'm going to begin this review by saying that this was the best book I have read in a while! It was addictive and I devoured it in just a few hours.

This book has two different narrators; Solange and Lucy. Solange is the soon-to-be vampire everyone would like to kill/marry and/or make queen. Lucy is Solange's best friend. She's human, but she has practically grown up with the Drake´s, she is unmoved but the whole vampire thing, and refuses to let Solange's protective older brothers boss her around.

The characters in this book were great, not just the main characters, all characters! I especially loved Solange's family (her seven, protective and sizzling hot brothers, and her kick-ass mother) and Lucy. Lucy was such a likeable character - funny, mad, fiesty and at the same time loyal, energetic, and confident. I adored her. Lucy has broken other people's nose bones! More than once! How can you not love her? =P
Solange on the other hand is more quiet and careful (understandable! She is under a lot of pressure), but also very brave. But among all the other charismatic, outgoing characters in the book, Solange blended in and did not really stand out as breakout character. I didn't care as much for Solange as I did for Lucy, for me it felt like Lucy's story more than Solange's!

There was never a dull moment in this book, the plot was always moving and the action and adventure never stopped! I can't wait for the second installment in the Drake Chronicles, Blood Feud, coming this June!

Summary:
This book has everything; Laughing out loud moments, fighting, action, friendship and two adorable love stories. Read it!
