Book Review: Paranormalcy

Title: Paranormalcy
Author: Kiersten White
Published: August 2010

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.
My Thoughts: I am sure that most of you have read raving reviews of this book around the blogosphere during the last six months. And - the high ratings are well deserved. This book is funny, light and fluffy - but it also has devastating parts of danger, death and destruction. The dark parts of it actually surprised me a bit, but this book succeeded with the almost impossible task of being both light and funny, and dark and exciting, at the same time! Well done!

Since Evie has grown up working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, and living in their center, she is not a regular high school girl. In fact, she is quite obsessed with the "real world", and her big dream is to attend a typical high school with cliques, cheerleaders and...lockers (!). Living in Sweden and attending a boring Swedish school, I actually understand Evie's fascination with high school - judging from movies and TV shows it looks like a lot of fun!

Evie also loves wearing pink, leopard, boots and bling - such a girly girl! But I guess when you are the only young person around, you have to cheer yourself up somehow!

There are two guys competing for Evie's heart. One of them is a fairy: amazingly beautiful and warm, but also cagey and untrustworthy. The other one, well no one is quite sure what he is and what his mission is... Can Evie trust either of these guys?

As I mentioned before, this book was a bit darker then I expected and it definitely contained some twists and turns. The build up to the climax was creepily good, but the ending itself disappointed me a bit. I felt like it was a bit rushed and not as dramatic as I thought it would be.
That being said, I really liked this book. The characters were great. Evie especially was a very likeable character and her relationships with other people felt realistic and genuine. Read this book and you will get a paranormal mystery mixed with fun girliness!
