Book Review: Soulless

Title: Soulless
Series: The Parasol Protectorate (Book 1)
Author: Gail Carriger
Published: 2009
Genre: Adult - Steampunk

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

My Review:
I really liked Alexia, the main character. She was funny, energetic, and didn't care about what other people thought about her. She was very different from other ladies around her, but didn't care much about it, which I thought was very brave and impressing.

This story was set in the 19th century's London, a time when new devises and inventions popped up everywhere - so who would think vampires and werewolves were weird or unnatural? No one. The set were very fitting for the story, and I loved that this book was a mix of strong characters, history, paranormal and romance.

Soulless was a great debut novel, and I'm happy to hear that there will be at least 5 books in this series! Put this one on your TBR list if you're a fan of historical or paranormal books - or just a sucker for a fun heroin, a sexy hero and a bickering romance!

This is the 3rd positive review I've seen for this one. Why do I still have this sitting on my shelf?? Ugh..

I've really been wanting to start this series. I just get sidetracked and end up buying other books instead. I love 19th century London so I'll definitely be getting this one next time.

Thanks! :-)

Now what exactly is steampunk? I have been wondering this for a while.

AngelGoneMad - I honestly don't know! I've seen this book marked as that everywhere though so I just wrote it there :P
I think it's books set during the industrial revolution though

Great review! I've been iffy about checking this book out, but I think I'll have to change my mind on that. :)
